Whey Protein or Plant Protein?

Whey Protein or Plant Protein?

I used to buy protein from GNC and just bought whatever said had the highest grams of protein for the lowest cost.  I didn’t know what I was doing and just thought more is better.  I was always feeling bloated and crappy until someone turned me on to this new plant based protein (it was all the rave in California at the time).  Even though it tasted like dirt, I wasn’t getting bloated anymore.  I was convinced whey protein was bad and plant protein was good.  I was ignorant.  The truth is that I was taking crap protein that is loaded with fillers and proprietary blends.

There’s really no regulation in the supplement industry.  So manufacturers can put a ton of crap in their product and as long as they can count it as protein they will.  So their game is to put in the cheapest stuff to raise the “g per serving” and charge as much as possible for it.  In reality, our bodies don’t digest the low quality ingredients they are putting in these powders.  So we get stomach issues, bloating, etc.

Bottom line is, whey protein isn’t the problem.  Low quality products are the problem.  Solution?  High quality whey protein

We eat protein for the amino acids.  There are 9 amino acids we can not produce on our own and need to get from our food.  These are called essential amino acids.  Animal protein contains all 9 essential amino acids making it a “complete” protein.

Plant proteins do not contain all of these essential amino acids, so Plant protein is “incomplete.”  It is possible to combine different types of plant protein to get a full amino acid profile but that will become a lot of work for you.  So, unless you have some animal protein allergy or have a moral conflict, then animal protein is where you want to get your protein.

So, get a lot of lean meats in your meals - chicken, turkey, fish, and lean beef.

For protein supplements, go for high quality whey protein.  The low quality stuff has lots of fillers and crap in it you don’t want.  Go for the top shelf when it comes to your protein.

Don’t be fooled by the “plant based” narrative out there that anything plant based is better for you.  It’s not.  It’s a marketing tactic that works really well on the general population.  Plant based protein has very little research and scientific case studies behind it while whey has been studied and documented for decades.
